Falls short of expectations despite stylish looks and and sales talk
The 2023, G70 is a nice looking car. It's sleek, stylish, sporty - has nice lines. Two engine choices (4cyl/6cyl), AWD options, and a couple of styling packages. We bought the 4cyl AWD, and a technology/sports package. I'm 6' tall and kind of a big guy, so I have to crawl into the car and look like a bear riding a tricycle - I have the same problem in other sports type cars, so this isn't Genesis' fault. The interior has a red pin stripe accenting the upholstery which gives it a nice, niche look. Once in the vehicle, it's pretty comfortable, though have not taken in on long rides. I can sit in the back and the front just fine. Trunk space is decent. Surprisingly, plenty of leg room. The technology controls are average. The wide screen is crisp and clear, but is a little small for my preferred tastes. The car handles quite well. It feels nimble and light. Yet, despite it's light feel, I can feel the road and feel well in control in all driving conditions. Though I've not taken it on a track, it does handle turns like it's no big deal. It's an affordable sports car with decent handling capabilities and good looks. Sadly, that's where it stops. Genesis dealerships in the area are few and far between. Took our brand new car to the local dealership in town. They scratched the car up in three places and the dashcam video captured the dealership unable to properly rotate the tires and unsure why the vehicle would not move after rotating them incorrectly. The dealership did not seem the care about the problems they caused. I contacted Genesis Corporation for assistance who were nice but basically said there was nothing they can do, that they have no control over the dealerships. Doesn't matter that the dealerships sell their brand - their cars. They declined to do anything substantial to help us resolve it. When we bought, the dealership promised loaner cars for services under included maintenance and warranty fixes, but are non-existent when we go to reserve one citing higher than normal bookings even though we schedule appointments months in advance. The reason appointments are months in advance is because that's how long it takes to get an appt for our car at the dealerships in our area. Recently took our car in for parking sensors going crazy at weird times and alerting to close objects that aren't there to another dealership in the area. Despite expecting it to be a warranty fix, the dealership wanted $300 to look at it. Never had that experience with a supposed luxury brand before. The service advisor was rude and made comments like "like I told your son...!" and was kind of take it or leave it and go pound sand. Felt absolutely no customer appreciation of any kind. We paid the fee for them to look at it, they claimed our parking sensor was cracked, yet no visible damage on the skirt over the parking sensor and they said it will cost $1,200 to replace it. I declined. Later they called me back and said they accidentally replaced it and I had to pay if I wanted my car back on time or they would take it apart again and take the part off that they replaced by mistake. Guess what - the fix didn't work and the parking sensors are still wigging out. The transmission has issues and has to constantly be reset by the techs to re-learn so it's not so clunky when shifting between 2nd and 3rd gears. Also, the back trunk is melting in the sun - it feels like plastic and the trunk is actually warping and you can see ripples in the back part of the trunk exterior. There is just so much wrong with the car that we regret our purchase. Want my advice? STAY AWAY from Kia, Hyundai, and Genesis. Our experience: we own and have owned Ford full-size trucks, own two large Acura SUVs, have owned Hondas, Dodge, and our Genesis). Genesis has been a bad decision leaving a bad taste in our mouth and that's saying something considering one of the other brands we used to own. We were considering replacing one of our Acura SUVs with a Genesis SUV, but after the G70 experience, quality issues, lack of customer service, and lack of support from Genesis Corporate, we won't buy another Genesis and can't wait to sell the one we have (sorry for the next buyer).
I gave 2 stars. The vehicle runs, it's not falling apart, and gets my son where he needs to go, but given the issues and my lack of confidence in longevity for this vehicle's long term viability, 2 stars is VERY generous.
